The Story of the Stamp Atlas

unnamed (2).jpg

Hello Stamp Explorers,

People accumulate many things throughout their lives; some collect memories, others objects. Most people think of collecting as simply accumulating old pieces. In reality, collecting is not just about gathering old items, but also about connecting with the past. My father chose one of these: stamps and encyclopedias. My childhood was spent among the encyclopedias and stamp collections that my family carefully amassed. Browsing through those heavy encyclopedias my father took down from the shelves, turning the pages of stamp albums one by one – these were enjoyable moments from my childhood. My father kept these collections not just for the sake of collecting, but to preserve time and memory. Perhaps the first sparks of the curiosity I still pursue today were born right there. Now I am a fourth-year chemistry student at Bilkent University. Amidst intense theoretical lectures, lab hours, and academic hustle and bustle, one sometimes longs for that simple yet profound world of the past. And it is precisely at this point that that habit from my childhood has re-entered my life: looking at stamps and trying to understand them.

Contrary to popular belief, stamp collecting is not merely a nostalgic pastime or an "old hobby" related to postal services. In fact, these small pieces are time capsules extracted from time itself. A stamp is not just a label attached to the corner of a letter; it is a silent witness carrying the aesthetic sensibilities, political atmosphere, cultural identity, and even scientific advancements of an era. Sometimes it depicts the shadow of a war, sometimes the exuberance of a revolution, and sometimes the tranquility of nature.

Stamps are tiny windows opening onto the forgotten pages of the calendar. Worlds are contained within those small squares. Each stamp tells a new story for those who know how to look. The Stamp Atlas exists precisely to pursue these stories. In this blog, stamps are not treated merely as collector's items; they are micro-archives where history, culture, art, and geography intersect. Each one carries a trace, a detail, a meaning waiting to be discovered. Are you ready to embark on this historical and mysterious journey with me?
